The Fated Scenery: Weihsuan’s Perception of Life
Weixuan’s artworks, No. 1-17 of Scenery Series mainly express her inner feelings during her artist-in-residence period in Vermont Art Studio, U.S.A. in 2006. The tremendous amount of time spent in walking engendered her new style formed by the integration of accepting and immersing of her emotions. Those swift sketch lines and irregular dots form the sensuous emulation, which is a kind of integrated inner interoception. It poses as an artist’s “being in the world” or even Henri Bergson’s “attention to life”
The absence of her voice gives rise to this magical attention, which allows her to pay much more observation to the changing sceneries during her walks. All the natural and sometimes perceived broken senses and sounds created by the forest, the air and the dew inevitably accumulated inside her, which are transformed into the essence of the paintings and help reveal her core of existence. She’s no longer shackled or limited to the voice, which she was born without. It’s exactly her senses to feel and see, which open up her antenna to channel with the surroundings as well as enable her to re-discover an undefined sensuous nature. She can’t clearly elucidate the causes of the elements composed in her paintings because the body and the awareness move in their own internal directions. And that particular scenery was the manifestation of her self-existence in the world shaped by a mixture of crazy and indeterminate senses. The outline had long been given to her and she just simply responds. The movements in the pictures are the best evidence.
Via lending out her ears to the brushes, Weixuan recovered the link to this world with her art. We, the audience, thus, are able to appreciate, observe and get to recognize the joy of freedom demonstrating right in front of our eyes.
